Man charged with 1994 murder of postal worker Frank Kerr in Newry

He will appear in court on Friday

A man has been charged with the murder of a 60-year-old postal worker in Newry 25 years ago.

Frank Kerr was shot dead during a robbery at the main sorting office in the city in 1994, his murder blamed on the Provisional IRA.

The murder of 53-year-old Mr Kerr, from Camlough, came just months after the IRA ceasefire of August 31, had been declared.

Detectives from Legacy Investigations Branch branch of the PSNI have charged a 60-year-old with a number of offences.

He has been charged with murder, robbery, possession of a firearm and amunition and being a member of a proscribed organisation.

As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

He is due to appear a Newry Magistrates’ Court this morning (Friday).
