A potential hatchet attack outside Newry Cathedral has raised public safety concerns.
The daylight incident took place on Hill Street in the centre of the city on Tuesday (Oct 21) below the steps of the Cathedral.
An online video captured the arrest, with police officers ordering the male suspect to the ground and placing him in handcuffs with the alleged weapon removed.
A PSNI spokesperson said:”Police in Newry received a report of a man carrying a hatchet in the Hill Street area, shortly after 1.15pm on Tuesday 21st October.
“Officers attended and arrested a 36 year old man. The man has since been charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and will appear at court on a date to be confirmed.”
Newry City Sinn Fein councillor, Aidan Mathers has condemned the recent incident, saying: “This kind of behaviour is criminal and completely unacceptable and poses a serious risk to the safety of our community. There is no excuse for carrying weapons on our streets.
“I want to thank the PSNI for their prompt and effective response in addressing the situation and making an arrest.
“I remain committed to working closely with the police and community partners to prevent such dangerous incidents and to help keep Newry safe for all.”
