Man accused of causing grievous bodily harm to another to face Crown Court in New Year

He was released on his own bail of £500 to appear before Newry Crown Court in January

Newry Courthouse

A Newry man accused of causing grievous bodily harm to another male will face Crown Court proceedings in the New Year.

Gareth O’Connor, 25, of Nursery Drive, appeared charged with grievous bodily harm with intent at the city’s Magistrates’ Court.

As the charges were read, it was heard that the offence was alleged to have occurred on December 1, of last year, and related to a named male.

Appearing in court, the defendant made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.

Although the court clerk told O’Connor he had the right to comment on the charges and to call evidence to the Preliminary Equiry on his behalf, he declined the opportunity.

Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.

Defence barrister Justin Byrne made no contrary submissions.

District Judge Peter Magill, satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer, released O’Connor on his own bail of £500 to appear before Newry Crown Court on January 7 for arraignment.
