Large police activity in Lissummon after reports of break-ins in area

There is a large police presence in the Lissummon area, just outside Newry, this evening (Monday).

It comes amid local reports of cars being stolen and break-ins occurring in the area.

A flare has gone up in the sky as police scour the Lissummon Road, just off the main Gosford Road.

It is understood a police helicopter had been deployed overhead shortly after 6pm.

There are unconfirmed reports that the suspects crashed a car and have made off on foot.

Residents have been urged to remain indoors and vigilant as this is an ongoing incident.

Lissummon GFC posted: “Please be aware that there are reports of cars being stolen and robberies occurring in the local area this evening.

“Please be vigilant and ensure all doors are locked where required. Police are in the area also.”

Sinn Féin councillor, Oonagh Magennis, said: “There has been a robbery and an attempted robbery in the Lissummon area earlier today.

“One assailant has been arrested, but three others made off on foot across fields in the Tyrones Ditches area. Police are on at the scene”
