A journey that was meant to be shared will take on an even deeper meaning this November, as Johnny Simpson prepares to trek to Everest Base Camp in memory of his best friend Adrian McAnarney and his dad, while raising vital funds for Evora Hospice.
This November, Johnny Simpson will take on the challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp, continuing a journey that was originally planned alongside his best friend and hiking partner, Adrian McAnarney.
The pair shared a passion for adventure and had previously climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together. Their planned trek to Everest Base Camp was to be another challenge they would face side by side.
However, following Adrian’s tragic death in a hiking accident in August, Johnny will now undertake the journey alone, carrying his friend’s memory with him every step of the way.
Johnny had originally planned the challenge in memory of his dad, with the aim of raising funds for Evora Hospice. Following the heartbreaking loss of Adrian, the trek has taken on an even greater significance, giving Johnny another reason to reach the summit of his challenge and honour two people who have had a profound impact on his life.
Although Adrian will no longer be physically by his side, Johnny is determined to continue with their plans, turning a shared dream into a tribute to their friendship and the adventures they experienced together.
For Johnny, the journey will be about much more than reaching Everest Base Camp. It will be an opportunity to remember his dad, honour Adrian’s life and raise money for a cause that provides vital care and support to people and families across the local community.
Johnny said “My Dad was always supportive and proud of every thing I have done and Adrian and Myself had talked about doing Basecamp from we completed Kilmanjaro trek, heading to Everest Basecamp in memory of my dad and Adrian has given me the strength to complete it.”

The trek to Everest Base Camp will be a significant physical and mental challenge, requiring determination, resilience and perseverance. As Johnny prepares for the journey, he will do so knowing that every step represents a personal tribute to his dad and his best friend, whose memory will remain with him throughout the adventure.
Funds raised through the challenge will support Evora Hospice, which provides specialist palliative care and support to patients and their families across the local area. Donations will help the Hospice continue delivering compassionate care to people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their loved ones through some of life’s most difficult moments.
Evora Hospice is grateful to Johnny for choosing to support its work through such a meaningful and personal challenge.
As Johnny sets off for Everest Base Camp this November, he will carry with him the memories of his dad and Adrian, honouring their lives and the special place they hold in his heart.
