Investigation launched after man killed in Newry workplace accident

A man has died following a workplace accident in Newry on Monday afternoon.

The Health and Safety Executive NI (HSENI) has launched an enquiry into the incident in which the man was reportedly crushed by a piece of heavy machinery.

The accident took place around lunchtime at premises at Carnbane Industrial Estate.

The HSENI said it was “aware of a workplace incident in the Newry area yesterday, and is making enquiries”.

A PSNI spokesman confirmed a man had died following an incident at the industrial estate.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed,” he added.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said it received a 999 call at 13.17 following reports of an incident in the Carnbane industrial area.

A spokesperson said: “NIAS despatched one officer to the incident. No one was taken from the scene.”

There are no further details at this stage.
