An intoxicated lorry driver was stopped in Newry today (Tuesday) following concerns from retail staff.

The HGV was stopped by Road Policing Interceptors from Sprucefield working in Newry early this afternoon.

The vehicle had been reported to police after a staff member in a Portadown retail outlet became concerned the driver was intoxicated.

A roadside preliminary breath test was carried out on the driver, which they failed.

In custody, an evidential sample of 56 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath was provided.

The legal limit in Northern Ireland is 35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “This driver will now be held in custody to appear in front of a local court tomorrow. Many thanks to that concerned member of public for making that phone call.”
