Huge £8.3m social housing development will see 92 new homes built in Newry

Martin's Lane Housing development in Newry

An £8.3m Newry housing development has been approved by council.

The Martin’s Lane application from 2021 was granted on Wednesday (Sept 20) at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

The applicant, Colm Meehan and Co Ltd, with an address at Fiveways Shop and Service will construct 92 properties with the majority identified for social housing.

Planning committee member, SDLP councillor, Declan McAteer said: “I welcome this development as a very much needed support for social housing in the city.

“These types of developments are especially needed in Newry and will help to bring back the population into the centre of the city as part of its overall regeneration.”

The site had previously gained acceptance in a pre-planning discussion (PAD) to be developed by the Education Authority for special education needs, with Rathore School located next to the lands. Though this was not proceeded with.

A letter of support for the Martin’s Lane housing development has been entered by Apex Housing Association Ltd.

The approval for Martin’s Lane was agreed this week by the committee with the understanding that the developer is engaging with NI Water over sewage capacity concerns.

Apex has recently supported the development of 255 homes at Craigmore View adjacent to the Fiveways Service Station in Newry to the tune of £16m.

A Housing Association grant of £19.7m was also given to the social housing development with the first new residents moving in earlier this year.
