A garda and a male civilian have been shot dead in County Louth, close to the border.
It happened at around 6pm tonight (Sunday), not far from Carlingford.
Gardaí in Dundalk say a woman has been “seriously injured”. She is in a critical condition in hospital.
It is being reported that the garda was attending a call to a domestic incident when he was shot.
The deceased officer is a married father-of-three in his thirties.
Initial reports had suggested that three people had been killed.
Gardaí have said more information will be made available but confirmed one of the deceased was an officer.
Earlier reports that a crime scene relating to the shooting in County Louth had been sealed off in Newry have been discounted by the PSNI, who said the activity at Kilmorey Street related to a non-suspicious death.
The scene, meanwhile, in County Louth remains sealed off.
The PSNI in Newry took to Facebook to offer their support.
They said: “Our thoughts are with our garda colleagues following the tragic events in Omeath this evening.
“PSNI will lend any assistance or support required.”
