Funeral details have been announced for a Newry man described as a “lovely lad” and “unbelievable man” whose body was recovered yesterday (March 19).
Thirty-eight-year-old Shane McEvoy from the Killean area of Newry was reported missing on Friday, March 13. At that time he was last seen in the Old Dublin Road area of the city.
An extensive cross-border and multi-agency search was conducted in the days that followed.
However, the devastating news came on March 19 that Gardaí had recovered a body and had stood down the search for Shane.

There has been an outpouring of grief online for the young man who was widely respected and deeply valued by his community.
Sharing their sympathies one person said: “Shane, God rest you. Such a lovely lovely fella, will never forget the craic from high school days! Just tragic news to hear today. Thinking of your heartbroken family and friends!”
Shane was formerly a soldier with the Irish Army and several people have made reference to his loyal service as a respected “comrade”.
Said one person: “Shane may you rest in peace. Too young to be taken, what a handsome fella and a brilliant soldier.
“Thinking of his family and friends at this sad time, you’re all in my thoughts and prayers.”
His tragic death has also caused prompted several members of the public to call for improved mental health services across the country.
“The government really need to put something in place to help those suffering with mental health,” said one.
Shane’s Requiem Mass is due to be held on Monday March 23 in St. Michael’s church, Killean at 11am.
Burial will take place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
A death notice described him as the dearly beloved son of Gabriel and Gemma, brother of Gabriel (Michelle), Orla (Paddy) and Ciarán, partner of Stacey, uncle to Darragh, Tiernán, Conan, Dexter, Rauirí, Frank and Saorlaith.
