Employment dispute at Newry Council set for fifth month as talks fail to reach conclusion

Unions have been taking a stance against the council CEO since April

An employment dispute at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC) look set to run in to its fifth month as talks fail to reach a conclusion.

Members of GMB, NIPSA, and SIPTU took action from April 10, with Unite joining the work to rule from April 12.

Normal services returned at NMDDC on April 24, though talks have not yet resolved matters.

A council spokesperson said: “Talks facilitated by the Labour Relations Agency (LRA) were held on Wednesday 5 July 2023 with the next LRA facilitated conciliation meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday 1 August 2023.”

The local authority employees continue to claim the council has reneged on a commitment to a partnership-based job evaluation process.

A spokesperson for the Trade Unions previously indicated to the Local Democracy Service that they would consider their position to reinstate industrial action if talks with the council failed to reach an agreement.
