Elderly resident taken ill after her home targeted in ‘atrocious’ burglary

An elderly woman has taken ill after a burglary at her home in Newry on Thursday evening.

The incident, which took place in the Greenfield Park area of the city, has been described as “an atrocious act”.

Newry City Sinn Féin councillor Valerie Harte revealed that the elderly victim had been left ill as a result of the incident.

“Twice within two weeks, burglars have targeted the area,” explained councillor Harte.

“This time, home of elderly residents sometime between 7pm and 9.30pm on Thursday in Greenfield Park. Entry was gained by the back window of the property.

“I called with the family this evening (Friday) to hear that the lady has taken ill as a particular result.”

Councillor Harte added: “This is an atrocious and terrible act from the lowest of the low. Please, ensure your properties are well secure, report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities and check on elderly residents.

“We don’t and cannot tolerate this in our community. Our thoughts and prayers with the lady and our entire community hope those perpetrators are caught and brought to justice.”
