Elderly resident has window smashed by man in hi-vis jacket

Pensioner

A Newry pensioner had a window in his home smashed in the latest of a series of disturbing attacks on the elderly in the city.

The incident was reported around 5.45am in the Church Street area on Friday.

And Sinn Féin city councillor Valerie Harte said it’s an attack which has left people very angry.

“An elderly resident had the window of his home broken in the early hours of Friday morning,” she explained.

“This happened at 5.45am in the morning and the assailant wearing a yellow visibility jacket was seen making of in the direction of Church Street.”

The local Councillor continued: “This was a totally disgusting act, and is not needed and should not be tolerated within our communities.

“Unfortunately it seems to be a growing trend in these type of incidents where elderly and vulnerable are being targeted. It has left many of us extremely angry.

“This has been a traumatic experience for this elderly gentleman, and I would urge residents to be vigilant and if they see anything suspicious to immediately contact the relevant authorities.”
