Elderly couple found dead in house outside Newry named locally

Greenan Road house in Newry

An elderly couple found dead in a house on a rural country road outside Newry have been named locally.

They were Jim and Mary McLaughlin.

RTE News reports that the couple, who have lived in the area for around 50 years, were found after a neighbour raised concerns that a normally well-kept garden had become overgrown.

The alarm was subsequently raised by the local postman.

The house on the Greenan Road remained cordoned off on Saturday as police continue their investigations.

The bodies of the couple were removed on Friday and a post mortem examinations have been carried out, the results of which are unknown at this stage.

Neighbour Bernie Downey, speaking to the Irish broadcaster, said: “I was just heart sorry to hear that would happen in our neighbourhood because these were two quiet, civil, very private people that never really mixed a lot.

“And it’s just sad if they weren’t well or that, that they didn’t have the wherewithal to contact somebody.”
