Dog fouling ‘must be top priority’ as new cleansing task force formed for Newry district

“The council must ensure that it takes a decisive, proactive approach to tackling the issue of dog fouling across the district so that our communities can be kept clean and safe for all."

A new task force has been set up to help with clean-up work cross Newry, Mourne and Down.

And, given the health risks associated with stepping in plenitful piles of poo, there have been calls for the issue of dog fouling to become its “top priority”.

The new task force has now met for the first time and it is to be all systems go!

Sinn Féin Councillor Geraldine Kearns – speaking after the first meeting – welcomed its formation Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s recognition of the “serious cleansing issues across the district that must be addressed”.

She added: “At our initial meeting I stressed that tackling the scourge of dog fouling, particularly in Newry City, must be a priority.

“Both businesses and residents have been in touch with us to raise concerns about the amount of dog fouling locally.

“Dog litter carries a number of diseases that can cause severe health conditions, from coughing and fever to swollen lymph nodes or even blindness.

“The council must ensure that it takes a decisive, proactive approach to tackling the issue of dog fouling across the district so that our communities can be kept clean and safe for all.

“This is a priority for Sinn Féin.”
