Deaths of elderly couple outside Newry not being treated as suspicious

An investigation into the sudden deaths of an elderly couple in a house outside Newry remains ongoing.

Issuing an update on Sunday morning, police confirmed that the couple died at the property on the Greenan Road some time ago but have not given an indication of how long but it is believed to have been months.

Their deaths are not being treated as suspicious.

The couple have been named locally as Jim and Mary McLaughlin. They had been living in the area for around 50 years.

In their statement, a PSNI spokesperson, said: “Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of a man and a woman at a property in the Greenan Road area of Newry.

“It is believed the deaths may have occurred some time ago.

“A post mortem has taken place and the deaths are not being treated as suspicious at this time, however enquiries are ongoing.

“As these are currently being treated as sudden deaths no further details of the deceased will be released at this time.”
