Daisy Hill Hospital’s renal dietetics team has been recognised as one of the top three in the UK.

The Trustwide renal service treats patients with kidney disease from Armagh, Dungannon, Craigavon, Banbridge, Newry, Mourne and some border areas of the Republic of Ireland.

Around 90 people attend the renal unit for dialysis, a lifesaving treatment for those living with kidney failure.

The team of specialist nurses, doctors, pharmacists, podiatrists, social workers, dietitians, technicians, health care assistants and administrative staff also support patients who have chosen a home therapy treatment and those attending outpatient clinics.

Director of Medicine and Unscheduled Care for the Southern Trust, Trudy Reid congratulated the team on their latest achievement: “Our renal team is very well regarded for the high quality, holistic care they provide and dedication to patients and families.

“Each year the Renal Registry reports on the performance of the 67 adult renal centres across the UK. We are very proud that the Daisy Hill renal team consistently achieves great performance and is amongst the best in the UK for patient experience and quality of care.

“This year, the service has once again performed very well in all of the registry’s standards for both dialysis and transplant patients and we are particularly delighted that we are in the top three units in the UK for bone health in our patients.

“Managing renal bone disease, which is a common complication for patients with kidney failure, is a key aspect of care led by our specialist dietitians. Our dietitians have helped to establish guidelines, monitor and deliver care in relation to bone disease and it is an absolute testimony to their dedication and expertise that we have achieved such good results for our patients.

“I would like to pay tribute to such a compassionate team, who are continually striving to improve the quality of life they offer people with kidney disease living in the Southern area.”
