A Newry councillor has urged the public to remain vigilant after a series of attempted burglaries in the city – including one incident in which local residents confronted an intruder inside their home.
Sinn Féin Councillor Valerie Harte said the latest break-in attempt occurred in the early hours of Friday morning on High Street.
While the would-be burglar fled after being challenged, the incident has left neighbours deeply concerned.
In a separate incident on St Clare’s Avenue, a van was broken into and tools and a wallet were stolen. Police inquiries into both matters are ongoing.
Condemning the latest spate of crime, Councillor Harte said: “I unequivocally condemn these criminal acts. Such incidents undermine the safety and security of our communities. Thankfully nobody was hurt.”
She said she is in close contact with both police and community representatives as investigations continue.
“I urge residents to remain vigilant: keep homes and vehicles securely locked, check in on neighbours – particularly the elderly – and report any suspicious activity immediately,” she said.
“Anyone with information, please bring it forward to the police.”
Councillor Harte added that Sinn Féin would continue to work with partners “to ensure Newry is a safe place for everyone”.
