Call for extra vigilance after attempted burglary at Derrybeg

Burglars fled empty-handed after being disturbed by a family as they tried to rob their home.

The incident happened in the Derrybeg area of Newry on Sunday night.

And it was not an isolated incident, as another local resident also had their shed broken into.

The incidents have led to fresh calls for heightened vigilance and for people to look out for their own – and neighbours’ – property.

Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey warned residents of Derrybeg and the wider locality to be on their guard.

The attempted house burglary happened at Second Avenue, Derrybeg.

He explained: “Fortunately the residents were at home and disrupted the burglary. Eyewitness evidence suggests a ‘D’-registered vehicle was used.

“The police have been informed.

“A homeowner also had their shed broken into.

“I would appeal to all to be extra vigilant and watch out for suspicious activity.

“Those engaged in these criminal acts against people and property need to be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law.”
