A first ever marathon run in aid of Cuan Mhuir Addiction Centres

Dublin Marathon takes place on Sunday, October 29

A Newry woman is participating in her first ever Marathon Run next month to raise funds for Cuan Mhuire Addiction Centres.

Katie Bennett will take on the challenging 26-mile Dublin Marathon on October 29.

Sr Consilio founded her first Cuan Mhuire in Athy County Kildare 51 years ago and today the Charity is recognised as Ireland’s largest provider of residential assessment and support for those suffering from addictions.

Katie is involved in many aspects of the day to day services provided by Cuan Mhuire Regional Addiction Support Centre in Newry, and she explained: “At any given time, Cuan Mhuire cares for approximately 600 residents providing some 50 per cent of the residential addiction support in Ireland.

“Three thousand people are admitted annually for residential support and an open door policy operates on a 24 hour per day basis, 365 days of the year.

“We have seen an enormous demand on our services by individuals and families who are suffering the effects of addiction and the negative consequence’s resulting from addiction.”

She added: “We are a Charity and now more than ever we depend on the generosity and support of the local community, which over the years, has been an inspiration and motivation for those of us involved with Cuan Mhuire.

“I am using my challenge of taking on the Dublin Marathon on Sunday October 29th to help raise funds for Cuan Mhuire.

“I didn’t sign up to win it, nor did I sign up to get a personal best, I am running it because I believe anything is possible and that I had the courage to start, and If I can help raise funds for a worthy cause then I have achieved my goal.”

Anyone who wishes to support the work we are doing by making a contribution can do so through: Donate to Charity on the following website www.mydonate.bt.com, or our Cuan Mhuire Newry Facebook Page.
