New look for Newtown’s Newry Street

Sinn Féin councillor Barra Ó Muiri has said he is delighted that funding he has lobbied for to improve derelict buildings in Newtownhamilton has been secured.

Councillor Ó Muiri said: “I was delighted to receive confirmation from Newry & Mourne District Council’s Economic Development section that funding has been secured to enhance the derelict buildings on Newry Street in Newtownhamilton.

“This improvement work will be carried out in advance of the Giro d’Italia cycling event which takes place on 11th May and will travel through Newtown.  The eyes of the world will be on Newtown while the cyclists are here and it is very important that our village is looking its best.

“Through my work with Newtownhamilton Community Association and the Caraher Caherty Sinn Féin Cumann I know that the people of Newtown were keen that the most positive view of the village would be broadcast to the media.  In response I lobbied for this funding, having also seen similar schemes being carried out elsewhere in the district.

“This work, once complete, will greatly enhance the visual appeal of the Newry Road and the village in general and I hope it helps instil pride in the area.”
