Tributes paid to former GAA player and young Middletown man remembered for his ‘big smile’

A young man from Middletown who passed away suddenly at the weekend has been remembered by his employer as someone who “always greeted us with a big smile and hello”.

Ciaran Gormley (23) died suddenly at his Monaghan Road home on Sunday.

In a post on their Facebook page, Traynors’ Motor Store wrote: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend Ciaran Gormley, who sadly passed away on the 24th of October 2021.

“Ciaran has been a valued member of our team and will be greatly missed by everyone, he always greeted us with a big smile and hello. Traynor’s would like to send our sympathy and condolences to the entire Gormley family.”

Middletown GAA, where Mr Gormley was a former underage player, extended their condolences to the family, as did Madden Raparees GAC.

Dozens of people also shared their shock and sadness at his death on The Commercial Bar Middletown Facebook page and sent their sympathies to his family.

Mr Gormley is survived by his parents Cyril and Mary Gormley (nee O’Gormon), sisters Kellie Kiernan and Alisha Gormley, brother-in-law Daniel Kiernan and nephew Jason Kiernan.

A death notice said he was the the grandson of the late Tommy and Bridie Gormley and Eugene and Elizabeth O’Gorman.

A funeral service will take place on Thursday at 11am in St John’s Middletown, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The family has asked that any donations go to suicide awareness.
