The Department for Infrastructure is working with ABC Council to consider additional safety measures at Gosford Forest Park, according to the Minister.

Thanks to sustained lobbying on behalf of residents for more than six years, elected local representatives are beginning to see the fruits of their labours, when it comes to road safety at the popular Co Armagh’s forest park.

Infrastructure Minister, Liz Kimmins recently met with one such representative, DUP MLA, Gareth Wilson on site to discuss the potential for a footbridge or right turning lane at the main entrance to the park on Gosford Road.

The meeting – on April 15 – was hailed as a “positive” experience by both parties.

There have been several serious collisions – and indeed fatalities – close to the entrance of Gosford Forest Park over the years.

Improvements are undoubtedly required and the Minister is promising to continue to work with council in regards to any future plans.

While focusing on a footbridge – that Mr Wilson says would be accessible to wheelchairs and bicycles as well as pedestrians – he also requested the Minister consider a right turning lane when making her assessments.

Minister Kimmins said road safety remains a “high priority” for the Department, and that she is committed to working “proactively to make our roads safer and address the needs of all road users”.

“We are all aware that every fatality on our roads is a tragedy for everybody impacted by the traumatic events, especially the families and friends of those whose lives have been lost,” she said.

“Significant improvement works have been undertaken at the main junctions along this road, and I have asked my officials to review the existing signs and road markings along the A28 to ensure they remain appropriate.

“A review of the speed limit on this road confirms that it is in line with our policy, however, I have recently undertaken a broader consultation on speed limits, and my officials are engaged in a review of the consultation responses.”

However, previous assessments with regard to the provision of a pedestrian crossing, unfortunately revealed the location did not meet the threshold for further consideration.

That being said, the Minister said she aware that council are considering additional measures including both the footbridge or right turning lane.

On these points, she assures her department will continue to engage with the Council on any plan or proposal affecting access and safety at Gosford.
