A building in the centre of Markethill which was the target of arsonists earlier this year – and only this week subjected to racist graffiti – is set to open as a new residential service for adults with mental health needs and learning disabilities.

The property, formerly known as Hebron House on the Main Street, was targeted once again by vandals in recent days, with those behind the latest project saying they are “disappointed” but determined not to be deflected.

The property – previously under the ownership of Good People – has been dogged by controversy in recent years with concerns raised among the community over the company’s “track record” and history of accommodating asylum seekers.

However, the facility is now owned and run by Inspired 2 Care which also has residential homes in Magherafelt and Hamiltonsbawn. Inspired 2 Care was founded by Roy Kenny and has Rosie Dilworth acting as its CEO.

They say the facility will provide “high-quality, person-centred care in a safe, homely, and supportive environment”. It is expected to open its doors later this summer.

It has been developed to support adults with mental health needs and learning disabilities, offering what the organisation calls “specialist support within their own community, close to family, friends, and the support networks that matter most to them”.

The home will be led by a local registered manager with “extensive experience in health and social care”, who is said to be “passionate about delivering exceptional care and creating opportunities for people to live fulfilling and meaningful lives”.

A spokesperson for Inspired 2 Care said: “We are incredibly excited to be opening our doors in Markethill. There is a growing need for specialist services for individuals living with mental health conditions and learning disabilities, and we are proud to be able to provide this much-needed support within the local community.

“The overwhelming feedback we have received from local people has been one of encouragement and support. Our aim is simple: to provide a safe, welcoming home where residents can thrive, build independence, and remain connected to the community around them.”

Addressing the recent vandalism and graffiti, the team said they were disappointed by the incident but insisted they remain committed to their plans, describing it as an “isolated” occurrence that would not distract from the work still to be done.

The spokesperson added: “This home is being created for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. It represents investment, jobs, and an opportunity to provide specialist care locally. We remain focused on opening our doors and delivering a service that the Markethill community can be proud of.”
