Man remanded in custody after serious New Year’s Day assault

 

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Newry during the early hours of New Year’s Day.
At around 2.30am it was reported that an altercation took place between a number of men in the area of Canal Street.
As a result a 28-year-old man sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose, fractures to his eye socket and jaw and bruising to his face and body.
A 21-year-old man was arrested in the Newry area yesterday evening (Thursday) in connection with the incident.
He appeared before Newry Magistrates Court earlier today (Friday) charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was remanded in custody.
Detective Constable Lisa McAteer is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information to contact CID at Ardmore Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
