Man dressed as police officer in armed robbery bid

A man dressed as a police officer is one of two being hunted after an attempted armed robbery in Co Armagh this morning.

Police tonight (Thursday) issued an appeal for information to trace the would-be robbers, who struggled with staff at the commercial premises before fleeing empty-handed.

It happened in the West Street area of Portadown at around 10.10am today.

Two men entered commercial premises, one of whom was dressed as a police officer.

The ‘policeman’ was carrying what is believed to have been a firearm and pushed a member of staff.

His accomplice jumped over a counter and wrestled with another member of staff.

He was wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms and a two-tone black and charcoal jacket.

Both are described as being in their 20s and they fled empty-handed, getting into a blue Toyota Avensis, which may have contained a third man.

The registration number was JHZ 1307.

It was later found abandoned, at around 11.30am, in the Fairgreen car park.

Detective Inspector Keith Galway appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or seen the vehicle travelling between West Street and the Fairgreen car park, to come forward.

He also urged anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity in the area of the Fairgreen at around 11.30am or shortly afterwards to come forward.

They can contact Lurgan police on the non-emergency number 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
