Man charged with attempted murder of two-year-old girl in Bessbrook

A 24-year-old man is due to appear in court in the morning charged with the attempted murder of a two-year-old girl in Bessbrook at the weekend.

Police were yesterday, (Tuesday), given additional time to question the man.

He is due to appear before Banbridge Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Newry.

As is normal procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

The charge follows a police investigation into an incident in the Charlemont Square East area of the Co Armagh village at around 7.45pm on Sunday night.

The child is still fighting for her life in hospital in Belfast.

Police in Newry had originally appealed for witnesses to an “altercation” or anyone with information to come forward.
