Man arrested for being drunk in charge of stolen car

A man was arrested late last night (Wednesday) for handling goods.

Police in Newry received a report of a white Toyota Avensis parked close to a school on Chequer Hill at around 1pm on Wednesday.

Two men travelling in the car urinated close to the school before driving off.

Officers made some enquiries and discovered that the car had been stolen in the Republic of Ireland.

Details of the vehicle were circulated to patrols and the car was stopped on the Dublin Road at 9.50pm last night.

The 51-year-old driver was arrested for being drunk in charge and handling goods stolen in the Republic of Ireland.

He was later released on bail pending further enquiries.
