Watch: Plague of biblical proportions as thousands of flies swarm lough shore families’ homes

'The warm weather is the reason and at night they are attracted to the light. Obviously if you have a window open in the house with a light on the ceiling will be swarmed with them too'

Flies Lough Neagh

It’s like something from a horror movie.

But this is not make-believe.

Thousands of flies swarming around the shores of Lough Neagh are making life unbearable for local residents.

And the weather is most likely to blame for the stomach-churning occurrence which has drawn a plague of biblical proportions.

This video (see below) was taken by Eamon Robinson and shows the extent of the problem.

One door is literally alive with flies as they cover the outside of the property.

Many within the area are afflicted and find it difficult to enjoy regular outdoor activities at their homes and are forced to keep doors and windows shut at all times despite the balmy conditions.

Eamon said it is an issue which they have had to put up with but this is now much later in the year and is particularly bad in 2020!

He told Armagh I: “We normally get them bad in May as they are called the May fly. They come off the Lough.

“The warm weather is the reason and at night they are attracted to the light. Obviously if you have a window open in the house with a light on the ceiling will be swarmed with them too.”

Clearly it will take more than a few tins of fly spray to solve this problem!

Be some cleaning up to do in the morning 🙈 keep the windows closed tonight round Lough Neagh 😬
