Vigil to be held in Lurgan for ‘loving, funny and caring’ Odhrán Kelly

'This is the third murder in a year in Lurgan. The people are fed up and it's time to take a stand'

A vigil is to be held in Lurgan tomorrow evening (Wednesday) for local 23-year-old Odhrán Kelly.

It has been organised to remember the “loving, funny and caring person he was ” and will be held in Edward Street at 6pm.

Odhrán, a nursing assistant at Craigavon Area Hospital, has been missing for several days.

A murder investigation is currently under way after a body was found in the Edward Street area of the town in the early hours of Sunday morning.

In a statement, the organisers appealed to people to “join all his family and friends” at the vigil.

“We need to stand together and unite that no more of our precious children are taken so cruelly,” they said.

One of those helping to organise the vigil added: “This is the third murder in a year in Lurgan.

“The people are fed up and it’s time to take a stand.”

Two women, aged 35 and 43, and a 31 year old man were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder and are in custody assisting with police enquiries.

Police said a post mortem is expected to take place today (Tuesday) after which it is hoped formal identification of the victim will take place.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly, who is leading the murder investigation, said: “The investigation is at a very early stage and I am appealing for anyone who was in the Edward Street or Francis Street areas of Lurgan between 2am and 5am on Sunday morning, and who noticed any suspicious activity or who may have captured dash-cam footage which could assist with the investigation, to come forward to police.

“I would also like to hear from anyone who has any CCTV footage to contact police.

“I am aware there may be some video footage circulating on social media and I would be keen to see it.”

Odhrán’s family has also appealed to anyone with camera footage, including doorbell cameras, of the Edward Street, Francis Street, Shankill Street area, Maple Court and surrounding areas to come forward.

A Major Incident Public Portal is available where anyone can upload CCTV, dashcam and any other footage via https://mipp.police.uk/operation/PSNI23S13-PO1

This is the third murder inquiry launched in Lurgan in the last twelve months following the killings of Natalie McNally last December and Shane Whitla, a few weeks later in January.
