UVF paraphernalia erected in Lurgan has been branded “sinister” and “simply an attempt to intimidate local residents”.
Alliance Lurgan Councillor Peter Lavery has slammed those responsible for the paraphernalia – from the Mid-Ulster UVF – which was erected on a lamppost on the Gilford Road earlier this week.
Councillor Lavery said it was a sinister move by local paramilitaries and has now complained to the authorities.
“This is simply an attempt by the UVF to mark territory and intimidate the local community in Lurgan,” he said.
“Crime gangs like them have no place in today’s society and should disband immediately.
“The community here wants to be left in peace so they can get on with their lives. This sinister attempt to try to bring fear into the area will not deter people from continuing to progress towards a more positive future.
“I have contacted the police and the Minister for Infrastructure asking for these paramilitary items to be removed urgently.”
