A teenager who tragically died after being struck by a train in Co Armagh has been named locally as Shea Martin.
The 19-year-old from Belvedere Manor in Lurgan was struck at Bells Row in the town by the 6.30am train from Portadown to Belfast.
Emergency services were deployed to the scene, with the line between Portadown and Lisburn closed for a large part of the day.
However, Mr Martin died at the scene as a result of his injuries, the NI Ambulance Service confirmed.
Upper Bann SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly expressed her sympathies to the family.
“It’s a devastating blow to the community and my thoughts and prayers are with them – they’re a very well-liked family locally – and also with the driver of the train and the ambulance crew,” she said.
“First responders are often affected by tragic incidents and they must get all the support that they need.
“This is the second tragedy for the community in just over a week.
“Last week we had the funeral of Niall O’Hanlon from Magheralin, who sadly passed away in a road accident.
“No doubt the community will rally again around this young man’s family.”
Upper Bann DUP MLA Carla Lockhart also offered her condolences.
“This incident has shocked people in the local area and my sympathies are with the family and friends of this young man whose life has ended so suddenly,” she said.
“There is obviously an ongoing investigation and it is important this establish the circumstances around this tragic incident.”
Shea was the beloved son of Tracy and Liam and dear brother of Liam and Maria.
