A Lurgan play park – forced to close as a result of sickening vandalism – has now reopened ahead of the school summer holidays.
The facility at Taghnevan had been subjected to ongoing incidents of damage and destruction including racist graffiti.
The actions had left a sour taste in the mouths of parents of young children who regularly use the park, as well as local political representatives.
When Armagh I reported on the vandalism a week ago, it had been suggested the park may be closed to the public for some considerable time.
A spokesperson for ABC Council said then: “The play park at Taghnevan has been subject to ongoing vandalism for several months, including repeated graffiti and damage to play equipment.
“Due to the scale of these incidents, the council has temporarily closed the park while it works with statutory partners to address anti-social behaviour at this location.
“Once the situation has improved, the remaining graffiti will be removed and the park will reopen.
“We encourage parents to speak with their children about respecting these important amenities, as anti-social behaviour in our parks serves no purpose and diminishes the enjoyment of spaces valued by local communities.”
The matter had been flagged by users with local Sinn Fein Councillor Mary O’Dowd.
And she has now confirmed the good news for the local community, that “following continued efforts”, the park was once again open.
Councillor O’Dowd also called for those behind the vandalism to stop immediately and once and for all.
“I’m pleased to see it has now been fully cleaned and is open once again for everyone to enjoy,” she said.
“This park is a valuable community space, and I want to thank ABC Council for making this issue a priority and helping restore it for local residents and families.
“I would also ask those responsible for vandalism and anti-social behaviour to think about the effect their actions are having on others, especially the children, and to stop before this valuable shared space is lost again.”
