‘So innocent and precious’: Lurgan stunned by sudden death of teenager Caoimhín

Tributes have been paid following the “sudden and unexpected death” of a Lurgan schoolboy.

Caoimhín Mallon passed away at Craigavon Area Hospital on Sunday, plunging his family and many friends into mourning.

Caoimhín – a son of Donna and Jude and brother to Saoirse and Dáire – was a Year 11 pupil of St Ronan’s College.

St Ronan’s said the untimely loss brought “deep sadness” to the school community, and added: “We send our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to Caoimhín’s family and friends at this sad time. St Ronan, pray for them.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. Amen.”

St John the Baptist College in Portadown also offered “heartfelt condolences” to his family and friends and added: “May God bless them all at this devastating time.”

The Drumgor Detached Youth Work Project in Craigavon – which works with young people in the area to combat social exclusion – said it was “saddened” to hear of Caoimhín’s passing.

Paying tribute to the teenager on social media, the DDYWP added: “When our team met Caoimhin, he was always pleasant and kind. He certainly kept our Youth Workers engaged with his wisdom and banter.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his Family and Friends.

“Our Team will support Caoimhín’s friends and all who knew him over the coming days and weeks ahead.”

Friends have also taken to social media to pay their own tributes.

One said: “Life’s so unfair taking away someone so innocent and precious.”

Another added: “Hope you’re in a better place and making everyone laugh up there.”

Caoimhín’s funeral will take place on Thursday.

His remains will repose at the family home 1 Downshire Avenue, Taghnevan, tonight from 7pm until 9pm and on Tuesday and Wednesday from 12.00 pm until 8pm.

The funeral is from his home on Thursday at 9.15am to St Paul’s Church for 10am Requiem Mass, with burial afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery.

Caoimhín is described in a death notice as a much-loved son of Donna and Jude and loving brother of Saoirse and Dáire, cherished Grandson of Pat and Philip Mallon and Marie Harvey and Joe Toman.

Caoimhín will always be loved and remembered by his parents, brother and sister, grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, and circle of friends,” it adds.
