It’s the end of an era as work has started on the demolition of the Waves Leisure Centre in Lurgan.
The facility – at Robert Street in the town – was one of a number of local venues closed and deemed surplus to requirements by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
Cascades in Portadown and Brownlow Leisure Centre in Craigavon all closed this year with the construction of the now newly-opened South Lake Leisure Centre.
The demolition work at Waves has now begun and it will be a sad time for many who have enjoyed the venue over the years as they watch this firm family favourite being pulled down.
Council had gone out to tender for the contract for the demolition.
The project – with a value in excess of £200,000 – was awarded to Newtown Ground Engineering, based in Newtownards, County Down.
The tender also included what was described as “associated works”.
It is expected that the work will take four months to complete.
