Growing concerns have been raised over the dangerous and antisocial use of scramblers and electric bikes in north Lurgan, with residents warning that noise, intimidation and damage to public spaces are becoming a daily reality.
The issue was highlighted this week after MLA John O’Dowd said he has been contacted by an increasing number of people frustrated by the irresponsible use of such vehicles in residential areas, green spaces and public amenities.
According to Mr O’Dowd, families have raised concerns about children being unable to safely use play parks, while older residents feel increasingly unsafe in their own neighbourhoods due to bikes being driven at speed and without regard for others.
He said the persistent noise pollution, damage to pathways and open spaces, and intimidation of pedestrians is having a serious impact on quality of life.
“The use of scramblers and electric bikes in this way is not only antisocial, it is often illegal,” he said, adding that many of the vehicles involved are uninsured, unregistered and being driven dangerously.
The concerns have been raised directly with police, with calls for targeted intervention in North Lurgan. This includes enforcement action, the seizure of uninsured or illegally used bikes, and a visible policing presence to deter further antisocial behaviour.
Mr O’Dowd stressed that the issue is not about preventing legitimate or responsible use, but about protecting communities and public amenities.
“This is about safeguarding neighbourhoods and ensuring residents can enjoy their local areas without fear, disruption or damage,” he said.
Residents experiencing ongoing problems are being encouraged to report incidents to police by calling 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
“Residents deserve peace, safety and respect in their local areas,” Mr O’Dowd added. “I will continue to press for firm action until these issues are properly addressed.”
