Man (56) arrested on suspicion of arson following fire at Lurgan home

A man has been arrested by police on suspicion of arson following reports of a fire in Lurgan.

Police received reports of the fire at a residential premises at approximately 9.50pm in the Portlec Place area of the town yesterday (Sunday).

A number of residents were in the property at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Detective Sergeant Stewart commented: “It appears that this was a deliberate arson attack.

“A 56-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody at this time, assisting detectives with their enquiries.”

Police attended the scene, alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Two appliances from Lurgan Fire Station attended, using one hose reel to extinguish the fire and dealing with the incident by 10.18pm.

A spokesperson for NIFRS said they believe the cause of the fire to be deliberate ignition.

Detective Sergeant Stewart continued: “Our enquiries are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who may be able to assist with our investigation to contact us on 101, quoting reference 1660 of 12/08/24.”
