Man (47) appears in court charged with attempted murder after bomb driven into Lurgan police station

A 47-year-old man appeared at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with attempted murder after a bomb was driven into Lurgan police station in March.

The New IRA had claimed responsibility for the attack.

A food delivery driver was hijacked in the Kilwilkie area of Lurgan and forced to drive a “crude but viable” device to the station.

Barry Anthony Toman, with an address listed as Drumnamoe Avenue, which is in Kilwilkie, is charged in relation to March 30 this year.

He is charged with attempted to murder ‘persons unknown’, attempting to cause an explosion, hijacking, and possession of explosives with intent to endanger life.

The charge sheet mentions an ‘improvised explosive device’.

The hijacking charge is ‘hijacking by compelling person to act’ with the full charge being that ‘unlawfully by force or threat thereof or by some other form of intimidation compelled a person to use a vehicle, namely an Audi A4, for an unlawful purpose, namely transporting an improvised explosive device to the vicinity of Lurgan PSNI Station’.

No bail application was made.

The defendant was remanded in custody and the case was adjourned to June 5.

On Wednesday, a 39-year old woman was charged with obstructing police and is due to appear at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on June 3. She has been released unconditionally in respect of allegations of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.

A 15-year-old boy was released by police pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
