Lurgan Rugby Club is to host a family fun day to help support a member of their “Lurgan Tiger family” who is currently battling cancer.
Calling their event “Run for Reinier” – in honour of parent and coach Reinier Van Dyk – the club have planned a 2k fun run and 1k walk with a host of family friendly entertainment on Saturday, July 19.
Reinier, they say, has been a “massive part” of the club for many years and most notably volunteering his time and expertise to carry out building work for refurbishment of their clubhouse.
Following his recent cancer diagnosis – which will involve travelling to Birmingham for specialist treatment – the club now say it’s time for the Tiger family to “get behind Reinier”.
A spokesperson for the club added: “During his fight to get better Reinier is unable to work this does not stop his household bills from coming in.
“Let’s give Reinier and his family one less thing to worry about at this time and give them all the support we can by digging deep into our pockets and supporting the fundraisers being held by the Club.
“As Reinier is often heard shouting from the sidelines ‘pump the legs’ you can do it!”
As part of their fundraising fun day – which kicks off at 9.30am – the club will lay on bouncy castles, breakfast baps, a bun sale, pre-loved kit sale, open the bar (for a “daddy creche”) and show a live Lions Test Match on the big screen at 11am.
They have also launched a GoFundMe page – which has already raised over £1,000 of a £4,000 target – with all proceeds from it and the fun day to go towards Reinier’s treatment.
