Lurgan shop assistant praised for chasing ‘armed robber’ from shop

CCTV footage shared of the attempted robbery depicts the shopworker being approached at the till area by a hooded male who hands her a piece of paper

A Lurgan shopworker has been praised for seeing off a would-be thief who attempted to rob the store “at knifepoint”.

The incident occurred today (April 11) at ‘Dougies’ DayToday on Queen Street.

CCTV footage shared of the attempted robbery depicts the shopworker being approached at the till area by a hooded male who hands her a piece of paper.

She reads the note and then immediately in defence reaches for a bat beneath the counter and chases the man from the store.

According to a source the note explained that “he had a knife and just wanted money from the till in tens and twenties”. It also apparently read: “Do what I say and no one will get hurt”.

Since the footage went live a number of people have praised the employee for her bravery.

A close friend of the shopworker said: “That’s my best friend. So proud.”

Another person added: “Fair play to her and didn’t bat an eyelid, she should get a medal.”

Police investigating a report of an attempted armed robbery at commercial premises at the Queen Street area of Lurgan on Tuesday April 8, made an arrest.

Sergeant Robinson said: “Shortly after 12pm, it was reported to police that a male entered a shop in the area armed with a knife and demanded money and cigarettes. A member of staff confronted the male, who left the shop empty-handed.
