Police descended on what appeared to be the scene of another shocking murder in Lurgan this morning – the third in under 12 months in the Co Armagh town.

Three people – two women aged 35 and 43 and a 31-year-old man – continue to be questioned over the suspected killing in the Edward Street area in the early hours of Sunday, December 3.

The man, who has yet to be identified publicly, is understood to have been found close to a burning vehicle.

The scale of the investigation on Sunday morning – and throughout the day – has been sizeable.

Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd described “a shocking scene” as a community awakened to swathes of police and emergency services. The cordon too is far reaching.

MP Carla Lockhart added: “This is very alarming for the local area and deeply concerning. My thoughts are with the deceased family. It is important to allow the Police time and space to investigate this developing situation.

“It is unhelpful to have speculation at this stage of the investigation. It is important that anyone who has information that they come forward and report it to the PSNI.”

Detectives are urging anyone who was in the Edward Street, or Francis Street, areas between 2am and 5am on Sunday morning, and who noticed any suspicious activity or who may have captured dash-cam footage which could assist with the investigation, to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 370 03/12/23.

It is the third murder inquiry launched in Lurgan in the last twelve months following the killings of Natalie McNally last December and Shane Whitla, a few weeks later in January.
