An oil tank fire which spread to a house in Lurgan on Friday afternoon has prompted fresh safety warnings – with part of Mourneview Avenue and the nearby Tandragee Road remaining closed into the evening.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it received a 999 call at 11.43am to reports of an oil tank on fire at Mourneview Avenue.
The blaze spread to a property and four fire appliances – one from Lurgan, one from Portadown and two from Banbridge – attended the scene.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus brought the fire under control and fully extinguished it. Crews left the scene at 3.25pm. No injuries have been reported.
Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said it was fortunate no‑one had been killed.
“Following the serious fire involving an oil lorry earlier today, the lorry remains at the scene. There is still oil inside which must be safely removed before the vehicle can be recovered,” she said.
“It is hoped this work will begin around 6pm and be completed later this evening. The road remains closed for safety reasons.
“Someone could have lost their life today. My sincere thanks to all our emergency services, particularly the Fire Service, whose efforts in such dangerous circumstances deserve huge credit.
“A number of BT cabinets have also been damaged. If you are having problems with your phone or internet, please get in touch and we will do what we can to help.
“Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation.”
