A past pupil from St Ronan’s College in Lurgan has graduated from Ulster University after completing a four-year degree apprenticeship with Terex, helping him build a career while earning a degree through a programme that combines workplace experience with academic study.
Ewan Murray, graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering through a programme delivered in partnership with Manufacturing & Engineering Growth & Advancement (MEGA), Ulster University and the Department for the Economy.
While many of his peers followed the traditional university route, Ewan said he initially was not convinced that university was the right path for him.
“I had convinced myself that university wasn’t for me,” he said. “The degree apprenticeship programme was brought to my attention by my careers advisor at St Ronan’s College and I was encouraged to apply. I liked the idea of getting into work while also studying towards a degree, without taking on a student loan and being able to earn while I learned.
“I’ve always been interested in building things understanding how they work, so engineering felt like a natural fit while seeming like something that could open a lot of doors in the future.”
The apprenticeship combined academic study with practical work experience. During the first year, he spent four days each week at university and one day with Terex. For the remaining three years, that balance reversed, allowing him to gain hands-on experience while continuing his studies.
Alongside his apprenticeship, he balanced university work and his professional responsibilities with a high level of sporting commitment. Last year, he represented Ulster University Judo at the European University Combat Championships in Poland.
Reflecting on the experience, Ewan believes the programme helped him develop both professionally and personally.
“I’ve definitely come out of my shell since starting at Terex. Taking part in projects, meetings and presentations has helped build my confidence and taught me how to advocate for myself and share the successes I’ve been involved in.
“Graduating has shown me how resilient and dedicated I can be. There were times when managing university deadlines, work commitments, sport and a social life felt difficult, but I’m proud that I stuck with it.”
He credits both his school and colleagues at Terex for supporting his development.
“My school’s careers department had a big influence on my journey because I probably wouldn’t have known about the opportunity otherwise. Within Terex, my manager Matthew White has been a great support, providing guidance when needed and giving me opportunities to develop and experience different roles within the business.”

Now working as a Manufacturing Engineer at Terex, Ewan is looking forward to the next stage of his career.
“I want to keep learning, develop new skills and continue contributing to the team. The apprenticeship has given me a strong foundation and I’m excited about what comes next.”
For students considering a similar route, he says the rewards outweigh the challenges.
“A degree apprenticeship can be hard going. After a full day at work, the last thing you sometimes want to think about is a project deadline or an exam. But learning how to put in that effort is an investment in yourself. Looking back, I’m really glad I took the opportunity.”
