Fundraiser launched to support eight-year-old Bleary girl with ‘rare and serious’ immune condition

'Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference and help allow Carrie to focus fully on Connie’s treatment and recovery'

A fundraiser has been launched to help support an eight-year-old Bleary girl set to undergo “intensive” treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital for a “rare and serious” immune condition.

Little Connie McCaughley was diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD), a rare genetic disorder in which phagocytes cannot effectively kill certain bacteria and fungi, leading to recurrent, potentially life-threatening infections and granuloma formation.

It can often result in infection in the lungs, including pneumonia, and people with CGD commonly experience infections of the skin, liver, stomach and intestines, brain and eyes.

According to the GoFundMe page opened to support Connie’s care, she will soon travel to Great Ormond Street Hospital for intensive treatment including chemotherapy and a “life-saving” bone marrow transplant.

Before that process begins she will also undergo “major” procedures in London.

She will be travelling with her devoted mum, Carrie who is also leaving behind her younger twin sister… as only one parent is able to stay with Connie in hospital during her treatment.

During this time, Carrie will have to stop working and being self-employed she is not entitled to sick pay or any “financial safety net”.

The page – opened by friends – also explains that her ability to work has already been “heavily impacted due to ongoing hospital stays, medical appointments, and caring responsibilities leading up to this point”.

The effort has already surpassed the £6,000 mark and continues to climb.

They say: “Anyone who knows Carrie knows she would never usually ask for help, but right now she is facing circumstances no parent could ever prepare for.

“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference and help allow Carrie to focus fully on Connie’s treatment and recovery.

“If you are unable to donate, sharing this page would mean so much. Thank you for your kindness, support, and compassion xx.”
