Distressed families have been left reeling after headstones in Lurgan’s Shankill cemetery were damaged overnight.
Police are appealing for information following the incident.
“Significant damage has been caused to headstones/cast iron surrounds/grave coverings,” said a PSNI spokesperson.
“Graveyards are not a playground, and the damage to the graves has the potential to cause distress to a lot of families.
“As well as the damage, there is a danger of injury to those visiting the graves.
“Parents please know where your children are, and if necessary have a chat about the dangers highlighted above.”
The damage has been met with widespread condemnation with one person describing the culprits as “heartless”.
Others branded it both “disgraceful” and “disrespectful”.
Unfortunately it’s the latest in a long line of similar incidents in the cemetery.
A number of years ago the DUP’s Carla Lockhart had even called for security cameras to be be placed in the graveyard in bid to combat anti-social behaviour – this call came after fencing was erected.
