Lurgan Park has been confirmed as venue to host the prestigious UK Pipe Band Championships for the next three years.
The championship event, organised by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, has been held in Belfast for the last four years and attracts upwards of 10,000 visitors annually.
The announcement follows last weekend’s successful Craigavon and District Pipe Band and Drum Major Championships event that saw thousands flock to the park to enjoy the melodic sounds of pipes and drums.
“We are honoured to be hosting the superb UK Pipe Band Championships in our borough for the next three years,” said Lord Mayor, councillor Julie Flaherty.
“Council has a longstanding relationship with RSPBA, having successfully hosted the Craigavon and District Pipe Band and Drum Major Championships in the park for the last five years as well as the spectacular All Ireland Championships in 2017.
“These events provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase our talented local musicians and to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to enjoy a day filled with music, entertainment and friendly competition.
“I am sure this will be another wonderful day in Lurgan Park for everyone.”
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s successful submission will bring the magnificent UK wide event to the park on Saturday 15th June 2019, 13th June 2020 and 12th June 2021 and is expected to attract in the region of 10,000 visitors to Lurgan each year.
The competition will feature up to 100 bands including the best local pipers from varying competition grades ranging from juvenile right up to Grade One along with drum majors and highland dancers who will all be hoping to be crowned UK champions.
