Co Armagh man sentenced to six years behind bars for part in terrorist murder plot

Court lady justice

A Co Armagh man has been sentenced to six years in prison for his part in what police believe was a terrorist murder plot.

Luke O’Neill, from Silverwood Green, Lurgan, was arrested in the town in September 2016 by PSNI Terrorism Investigation Unit investigating dissident republican terrorist activity.

The 25-year-old was charged with two counts of possession of explosive between August 30, 2016 and September 2, 2016.

Speaking after the sentencing at Belfast Crown Court earlier, Detective Inspector Orr said: “Our proactive operation saw officers recover an extremely dangerous Explosively Formed Projectile from a derelict house in a residential area and arrest four men.

“We believe that our operation saved lives and undoubtedly made the community safer.

“The sentence handed down to Luke O’Neill today should send a clear message to those involved in perpetrating dissident republican terrorist criminality that PSNI is dedicated to halting their despicable activities and placing them before the courts to answer for their crimes.”

A number of other people are due to stand trial later this year in connection with the same operation.
