The accused was remanded in custody

A county Armagh man has denied any involvement in a plot to try and kill an off-duty police officer over two years ago.

Sean McVeigh, 36, of Victoria Street in Lurgan pleaded not guilty at Belfast Crown Court earlier today.

He appeared to face two charges connected to the murder bid in Eglinton on June 18, 2015.

The charges are attempted murder and possession of a improvised explosive device with intent to endanger life.

McVeigh was arrested in Portadown by detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch in May 2016.

A trial date has been set for January 15, next year with the case to be reviewed at the end of November.

The case is expected to last up to four weeks die to the number of witnesses to be called.

It was reported that the officer’s wife disturbed a man trying to place the bomb under her husband’s vehicle, which was parked in their driveway.

McVeigh was remanded in custody to await the forthcoming trial.
