Boy (16) arrested following spate of thefts from cars in Lurgan

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested following a series of thefts from cars and attempted thefts from cars in the Lurgan.

The thefts occurred sometime overnight, between Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22.

Sergeant Bigger said: “It was reported that a driving licence and a bank card were taken from a vehicle in the Richmount Gardens area of the town, and a driving licence, passport, medication, a quantity of jewellery, and an e-scooter were taken from a car in the Avondale Green area.

“A driving licence and two bank cards were also reported to have been taken from a car in the Ashdene Park area.”

He continued: “It was further reported that a number of vehicles were broken into in the Drumlin Drive, and Monbrief Walk areas of the town, however it is not believed at this stage that anything was taken during these incidents.

“Criminal damage was also reported to have been caused to a car in the Monbrief Walk area.

“A 16-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of theft from vehicle and interference with vehicles. He remains in police custody at this time, assisting with enquiries.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of these incidents, and would appeal to anyone who might have any information which might assist to us get in touch.

Lurgan Sinn Féin councillor, Mary O’Dowd, condemning the incidents, said: “Police are dealing with reports of at least eight vehicles having been broken into with valuables being stolen and damaged caused.

“Hard working families have woken up this morning to see their vehicles damaged and personal belongings ransacked.

“I understand police have a suspect in custody and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it to the police’ .
