Bogus caller tries to trick 90-year-old by saying he was sent by priest to bless him

A bogus caller tried to trick his way into the home of a 90-year-old man by pretending he was sent by a priest to bless him.

The pensioner’s 87-year-old brother was also in the house just outside Lurgan, county Armagh.

The caller claimed to have been sent around by the local priest to give him a blessing.

A PSNI officer said: “Thankfully the caller wasn’t admitted into the house and no harm came to either gentlemen. On checking with the local priest it was confirmed to be false. A neighbour reported the incident to police.

“Cold callers will use any excuse to get in through the door of people’s houses as this example clearly shows – using the Church as an excuse to prey on two elderly and vulnerable gentlemen.

“Thankfully nowadays people are more clued up about cold callers. We still have valuable members of our communities that are vulnerable for various reasons and may need that extra wee bit of support from those around them.

“You know who they are in your neighbourhood – please keep a wee eye out for them, especially over the winter months.

“We still recommend our ‘No Cold Caller’ stickers – they give a very clear message!

“If you would like one for your front door, a relatives or friends please get in touch by calling 101.”
